In 1954, the Stratocaster was the first Fender guitar to receive a sunburst finish. The original two-tone lacquer sunburst consists of an outer layer of Dark Salem brown graduating into Canary Yellow. Two-tone sunbursts continued until 1958, when Fender began blending Cherry Red to create three-tone sunbursts.
